A new study highlights a potential link between delayed REM sleep and Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting that taking longer to reach REM sleep is associated with key biomarkers, including elevated amyloid beta and plasma p-tau181 levels. REM latency, the time it takes to enter the REM stage, may serve as an early marker for dementia risk. The study involved 128 participants, including individuals with Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment, and normal cognition, who underwent sleep studies and brain scans. Researchers stress that while the findings are promising, more research with larger, diverse samples is necessary to confirm whether delayed REM sleep directly impacts dementia progression or if it can be used as a reliable diagnostic tool.
