A new systematic review and meta-analysis in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that replacing animal-based meat with plant-based alternatives for eight weeks or less may significantly reduce cholesterol levels—lowering total cholesterol by about 6.6% and LDL ("bad") cholesterol by 12.1% in adults without cardiovascular disease. Sensitivity analyses highlighted that mycoprotein-based products, derived from mushrooms, showed particularly strong cholesterol-lowering effects. Although the weight loss observed was minimal, the findings indicate that even ultra-processed plant-based meat alternatives might serve as a useful transitional food toward a more whole-food, plant-based diet. Researchers emphasize that long-term studies are needed to fully understand these benefits and to determine the best dietary strategies for improving cardiometabolic health.
