Ultra-Processed Foods Tied to More Than 124,000 Preventable Deaths in U.S.

A global study has linked the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) to more than 124,000 preventable deaths in the U.S. annually. The study found that for every 10% increase in the amount of UPFs in daily diets, the risk of death from all causes rose by 2.7%. UPFs, which are low in nutrients and high in calories, sugar, salt, and fat, are linked to various health problems, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. The rise in UPF consumption, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, has raised concerns about its growing health impact. Experts call for global policies to limit UPF intake and encourage traditional, minimally processed food options.
